3 fascinating facts about the global tourism industry 🗺️

Global tourism is booming. This is according to Julia Simpson, President & CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council who adds that 2024 is set to be a record-breaking year for tourism.

In this week’s edition of In the Loop, we’re giving you three fascinating facts about the thriving travel and tourism industry.

1️⃣ The global travel and tourism sector was valued at $7.7 trillion in 2022.
2022 was also a good year for employment in the travel industry. The sector created 21.6 million new jobs that year, bringing the global total to 295 million. This means that in 2022, the sector supported 1 in 11 of all roles, worldwide (World Travel & Tourism Council, 2022).

2️⃣ Over 2,000 people arrive in a foreign country every 60 seconds.
Within the same 60 seconds, around 56 pieces of luggage get lost. In 2022 alone, close to 26 million pieces of luggage were lost, delayed or damaged - nearly eight bags in every 1,000 (Rajan Datar, BBC Presenter, The Tourist Trap, 2022).

3️⃣ France is the most visited country in the world.
In 2023, around 100 million tourists visited France, well ahead of the United States with 69.8 million visitors and Spain with 60.7 million. Interestingly, the most visited place in France is Disneyland Paris! Some 14.9 million people visit the amusement park every year (Alliance Française de Melbourne, 2024).
