What are the 4Ps of effective leadership?

Leadership involves intentional work and is a constant learning journey, according to Harvard University’s R. Wilkinson and K. Leary.

In their 2020 journal “Leading with Intentionality: The 4P Framework for Strategic Leadership”, the two Harvard researchers introduced a model that emphasizes four key attributes that effective leaders should continuously work on.

1️⃣ People: People-oriented leadership focuses on continuously building strong relationships and connections with team members. Effective leaders practice empathy, active listening, and genuine concern for the well-being and growth of their team members. They understand that a motivated and engaged team is essential for achieving goals.

2️⃣ Process: Process-oriented leaders are skilled in creating and improving workflows, systems, and processes. They understand how to streamline operations, allocate resources effectively, and optimize performance.

3️⃣Projection: Effective leaders ensure that their actions and decisions are based on a clear understanding of their team members' unique qualities and perspectives. In order to do that, leaders need to continuously check their unconscious tendency to attribute their qualities or emotions to others as it can influence team dynamics, communication, and overall performance.

4️⃣Perception: In leadership, understanding the perception of others is essential for effective communication, decision-making, and relationship-building. Leaders who are aware of how their actions and words are perceived by their team members can better adapt their approach and ensure that their intentions are accurately understood.
