The state of women in leadership
In the latest Fortune Global 500 list, only 28 are led by women.
According to the London School of Economics’ Ellie Smith and Lucy Kallin, this means that nearly a third of the world’s income are governed by men. They also state that fewer women occupy the chief executive officer suite today than last year.
Clearly, we’re still a long way from achieving gender equity at the highest levels of business.
What’s next? It’s time to shift our focus.
Instead of asking, "What can women do to reach leadership roles?” we must ask ourselves, “What can we do to break down the barriers that are stopping them?”
Smith and Kallin emphasize that now is the time for companies to double down on their efforts to create equitable workplaces.
✅ Eliminate bias in recruitment
✅ Embed inclusive leadership values
✅ Cultivate a culture of inclusion
✅ Create female-led sponsorship and mentorship programs
✅ Offer affordable childcare and flexible work arrangements
✅ Hold regular dialogues to ensure processes are fair and equitable
The current state of gender equity in leadership impacts us all, not just women. It’s time to take gender equity seriously.
In this week’s edition of In the Loop, we’re highlighting the stories and insights of successful women who continue to lead, inspire, and shape their respective fields.
